Floods in southern Thailand killing 11 people

Floods in southern Thailand killing 11 people and displaced thousands of people. The victims were washed away or buried in landslides tide when floods inundated homes and commercial area that houses about one million people in one of the months should be the hottest this year.
Residents left without electricity in many areas, while road, rail, and air line to the southern region remain closed.
Thousands of people stranded on the tourist island of Koh Samui and Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand at the time the ferry was canceled due to bad weather.
Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the government had sent aircraft carriers to rescue about 1,000 people trapped on the island of Koh Tao.
"There are about one million people affected in many provinces. At first we thought the flood would last one or two days, but now it is a week," he said.
National airline Bangkok Airways said there were 2,000 people, mostly tourists, stranded on the island of Samui in both the airport or the hotel after the airline canceled flights for two consecutive days.
About 800 passengers are also waiting in Bangkok to travel to the island.
Bad weather and power outages at Samui Airport prohibit flying over 50 flights on Monday and Tuesday.
Flooding, which began in southern Thailand last week, killing seven people in the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, three people along the coast in Surat Thani, and Phatthalung a neighboring province.
Overall, 80 districts in eight provinces had been declared a disaster area by the Thai disaster prevention and mitigation department.
Devastating floods in Thailand late last year killed more than 220 people, destroying homes or livelihoods of about 8.6 million people in 51 of the 76 provinces of the kingdom.
